Everything That Is Duty-Free in The Bahamas

A surprising amount of what Bahamians buy on Amazon is duty-free: laptops, desktop computers and monitors, printers, routers and computer parts, printed books, medicines, baby clothing, diapers, strollers and cribs, headphones, cameras, luggage and handbags, jewelry and wrist watches, sunglasses, LED lamps, fans, generators, exercise equipment, bicycles, cement, and certified energy-efficient appliances (concession heading 9869.00.00), among others.
There are surprises in the other direction too: smartphones carry 10% duty (not free, as commonly believed), mattresses 60%, speakers and game consoles 45%.
"Duty-free" does not mean "fee-free": every import still pays the customs processing fee (1%, minimum $10) and 10% VAT on the landed cost. A $1,000 laptop lands at roughly $1,111 — no duty, but $10 processing and $101 VAT.
It also means Amazon's Import Fees Deposit on these items should be small. When it comes in higher, the item may have been classified under a different tariff heading than the Bahamas schedule uses — worth comparing before you buy. The deposit is refundable: Amazon returns any unused portion on items it ships to The Bahamas itself.
