Amazon Global vs a Florida Freight Forwarder: Which Is Cheaper?

There are two routes for Amazon orders to The Bahamas, and the cheaper one changes item by item.
Amazon Global shipping
Amazon ships directly and collects an Import Fees Deposit at checkout — a generic estimate of Bahamas duty and taxes based on Amazon's own product classification. It is convenient: one transaction, no forwarder account, nothing to clear. The deposit is refundable, and Amazon returns any unused portion on items it exports to The Bahamas itself. You also pay Amazon's international shipping rate.
The trade-off is that you have no control over the classification, and therefore no control over the estimate. If Amazon maps your duty-free laptop to a dutiable heading, you front the money and wait for a refund.
Florida freight forwarder
You ship to a Florida address (most forwarders give you one), pay the forwarder's rate to Nassau or Freeport, and either the forwarder clears customs or you self-clear on Click2Clear. You pay the actual duty directly, with no deposit to reconcile afterward.
The advantages compound if you shop regularly: you can consolidate several orders into one entry and pay the $10 processing minimum once instead of five times, and you can buy from retailers that do not ship internationally at all.
The four questions that decide it
1. What is the duty rate? On a duty-free item the Bahamas side of the bill is small and predictable, so the deciding factor is purely shipping cost. On a 45% item the classification matters enormously, and controlling it yourself via a forwarder is worth real money.
2. How heavy is it relative to its value? Forwarders bill by weight or volume. A three-pound $1,200 laptop is nearly free to forward; a $450 sofa is not. High value per pound favours the forwarder; low value per pound favours Amazon Global, where shipping is bundled.
3. Are you buying one thing or several? One item, once: Amazon Global is simpler and often no worse. A monthly habit: the forwarder wins on consolidation alone. Four separate $50 orders cost $108 in import charges; the same goods in one entry cost $75.
4. Does the deposit look wrong? If checkout's Import Fees Deposit is far above the Bahamas calculation, that is a classification mismatch. You will probably get it back, but you have lent Amazon the difference in the meantime — and if it is far below, expect a balance due at the border.
Remember freight is taxed
Whichever route you take, freight is not tax-free. On a $600 TV at 35% duty, adding $120 of freight raises total import charges from $307.50 to $439.50 — $132, which is $12 more than the freight itself, because VAT applies to the landed cost including freight. And because Customs assesses duty on the CIF value, freight inside your declared value attracts duty as well.
This is why a forwarder quote of "$X per pound" always understates the delivered cost, and why comparing the two routes on shipping price alone gives the wrong answer. Put the freight figure into the calculator and compare landed totals.
The short version
- Light, high-value, duty-free (laptops, cameras, headphones): forwarder, usually comfortably.
- Bulky, moderate value (furniture, large appliances): Amazon Global is competitive, because forwarder freight dominates.
- Regular shopper, many small orders: forwarder, for the consolidation alone.
- One-off purchase, no forwarder account: Amazon Global, and check the deposit against the real figure.
